Anaplan, FP&A

Anaplan Projects: The Customer Is Always Right - Or Are You?

In business, you’ve probably heard the golden rule: “The customer is always right.”  But in Connected Planning projects — especially when implementing Anaplan — that phrase works better as a guideline than a commandment.

As an Anaplan partner, our role isn’t just to say “yes” to every request. It’s to listen, advise, and align every decision to one central question:

“Will this help deliver the business value we’ve committed to together?”

When you’re transforming processes and moving from legacy tools to a platform like Anaplan, keeping value as the North Star is what ensures your project delivers long-term impact — not just a technical go-live.

Start Every Anaplan Project with a Clear Value Outcome

In our advisory approach, the first step of any Connected Planning project is defining the value outcome you expect.

This isn’t just a project requirement — it’s your benchmark. Every decision, build, and configuration can then be measured against that outcome:

●    Does it get you closer to the value promised?

●    Is it scalable, sustainable, and efficient?

●    Does it make the most of Anaplan’s capabilities?

When we align early, we can have open conversations about when your ideas support the goal — and when there’s a better way forward.

5 Ways We Keep Value at the Centre of Anaplan Implementations

1. Not all tools are created equal

What worked in Excel, legacy ERPs, or other planning tools won’t necessarily make sense in Anaplan. Remember when you implemented your current processes? Your imagination and approach were constrained by the limits of your toolkit at the time. Technology has moved on and so have the possibilities. Trying to replicate old processes 1:1 is like buying a Ferrari and still trying to use the cycle path. Sure, both have wheels — but good luck with that!

2. “Copy-paste” processes don’t always fit

It’s natural to want new models to mirror your current processes. It’s safe. Familiar. But the point of switching to Anaplan is to optimise, not mimic. Connected Planning is about improving efficiency and collaboration — not just recreating the past. Processes should be rethought, improved, and adapted: not copied and pasted from the past.

3. Just because it’s possible doesn’t mean it’s smart

Anaplan is flexible, and yes, many things are technically possible. But that doesn’t mean every request should be built exactly as asked. Some modelling choices may look good on paper but result in poor performance, unnecessary complexity, or even erode the value you’re aiming for.

A prime example is granularity. Just because you can input assumptions at the nth level of detail doesn’t mean you should. Doing so can create hundreds of thousands of assumptions to review, update, and input — slowing your organisation down instead of building agility. Connected Planning helps you strike the right balance, bringing clarity without unnecessary complexity.

A big part of our job is guiding you toward scalable, sustainable solutions — even if that means saying, “Let’s rethink this.”

4. You know your business — we know Anaplan

You’re the expert in your organisation. But when there’s a gap in platform knowledge, it’s easy to unintentionally push for old processes to be rebuilt exactly as they were — missing the chance to take advantage of Anaplan’s smarter, more efficient alternatives. That’s where we step in — not to disagree, but to collaborate and guide with a deeper understanding of what’s possible and which approach will drive your value outcomes.

5. Change can be scary — and that’s normal

Migration projects bring change. Change brings uncertainty. Sometimes, resistance to new models or processes stems from fear of the unknown. By simply porting your existing processes into a new tool, you’ll only ever see efficiency benefits: faster, quicker, less effort. And that’s great, but to be truly transformational, you need to think differently and take advantage of what’s now possible.

We’ve seen best practices across multiple industries, and we only bring you approaches that we know work.  At Profit&, our aim is to bring empathy, clear communication, and quick wins that turn hesitation into enthusiasm.

Is the Customer Always Right in Connected Planning?

Not always — but your vision, goals, and success will always be our focus.

By anchoring every decision in your expected business value, we make sure Connected Planning projects with Anaplan don’t just deliver a system — they deliver measurable impact.

That’s the real role of an Anaplan partner: to listen, guide, and collaborate so that when the project is done, you’re not just “right” — you’re successful.
